Exposed aggregate is a decorative concrete finish that reveals the natural stone contained within the surface of the concrete. The result is a textured finish with visible stone color and variation that can complement homes, landscapes and outdoor living areas.
After the concrete is placed and finished, the surface is treated and allowed to reach the proper stage of curing. The thin outer layer of cement paste is then carefully removed to reveal the decorative aggregate immediately beneath the surface.
Timing is critical. Removing the surface too early can disturb the stones, while waiting too long can make it difficult to expose the aggregate evenly. Producing a consistent, attractive finish requires experience with concrete placement, curing conditions and the exposure process.

Marc Todd Concrete offers both pea stone and native stone options for exposed aggregate projects. Both provide natural color variation, but they create different finished appearances.
Pea stone is smaller and provides a finer, more uniform texture. Native stone is generally somewhat larger and offers noticeable variation in stone size and color. Its naturally rounded surface can create a comfortable walking area suitable for patios, sidewalks and areas used with bare feet.
Exposed aggregate can be incorporated into straight or curved sidewalks, patios, steps, porches, fire-pit areas, retaining walls, planting beds and other custom concrete features.
Using the same finish across connected surfaces can unify a large outdoor space. Exposed aggregate can also be combined with traditional concrete, colored concrete, paving bricks, landscaping and decorative borders to create contrast and visual interest.
An exposed aggregate project still requires the same careful site preparation, grading, reinforcement and concrete construction as other exterior flatwork. Proper elevations help direct water away from homes and finished surfaces, while steel reinforcement provides additional strength.
The finished surface must also be properly cleaned, cured and protected. When installed correctly, exposed aggregate provides an attractive, durable and low-maintenance finish designed for years of exterior use.
