When planning a new concrete project, it is important to consider the type of finish your concrete contractor will apply. A skilled concrete finisher should produce an even slab with a properly closed surface, without unnecessary dips, chatter marks or distracting trowel marks.
The correct finish helps determine how the completed concrete will look, how comfortable it will be to walk on and how safely it can be used when the surface becomes wet. The best finish depends on the location of the concrete and how the area will be used.
For exterior concrete that may become wet, a light broom finish can improve traction without taking away from the clean appearance of the finished slab. This type of finish is commonly used for concrete driveways, sidewalks, patios, porches and other exterior walking surfaces.
The broom is drawn evenly across the surface after the concrete has been properly placed, leveled and finished. The timing and pressure used during this process affect the depth and consistency of the final texture.
The broom texture should not be excessively rough. A harsh finish can be uncomfortable under bare feet, harder to clean and more difficult for children, older adults or people with limited mobility to walk across.
