At the Benchmark facility in Waterloo, Marc Todd Concrete completed a heavy-duty commercial slab poured 12 inches, or one full foot, thick. The slab was constructed with reinforcing steel spaced at two feet on center, a vapor barrier beneath the concrete and IntraSeal integral water-repellent admixture in the concrete mix. The Lennard Ag project required concrete to be placed on the second story of a commercial agricultural building. A pump truck was used to deliver a specialized lightweight concrete mix to the elevated floor area. The project demonstrates the planning and placement capabilities required when direct ready-mix truck access is not possible. The GT Independence work in Sturgis includes commercial concrete parking areas and approaches planned around the property's traffic flow, drainage and water-detention area. Commercial concrete may need to support passenger vehicles, delivery trucks, forklifts, machinery, storage systems or other concentrated loads. Slab thickness and reinforcement should therefore be based on the use of the finished surface rather than a one-size-fits-all specification. We begin by reviewing the planned use of the concrete, site access, elevations, drainage, expected loads and any project specifications. This information helps determine the appropriate preparation, reinforcement, concrete mix, thickness and placement plan.
The subgrade and base are prepared for the project conditions before forms and reinforcement are installed. Depending on the plans and application, the work may include reinforcing steel, vapor barriers, thickened sections or other project-specific construction details.
Concrete is placed using the access method appropriate for the site, including direct truck placement or concrete pumping when required. Our crew maintains the planned elevations and completes the specified finish, edges and control joints. Weather conditions, curing and protection are also considered during project scheduling.
