Long-term floor performance begins below the concrete. The subgrade and stone base must be evaluated, graded and compacted so the slab has consistent support. Building posts, door openings, plumbing, floor drains and other penetrations must also be considered before placement begins.
Depending on the building and intended use, the project may also include a vapor barrier, rigid insulation, reinforcing mesh, rebar or other specified components. We coordinate the concrete portion with the building conditions and agreed project scope.
Concrete thickness and reinforcement are selected according to the floor plan, expected traffic, equipment weight and construction requirements. A floor used for passenger vehicles does not have the same demands as one supporting loaded farm or commercial equipment.
Control joints are laid out to help manage normal concrete shrinkage and reduce random cracking. Joint spacing, reinforcing details and concrete placement are planned together rather than treated as separate parts of the job.
Many pole barn projects also need exterior concrete at overhead doors, service entrances and walkways. A concrete apron provides a durable transition between the building floor and the driveway or parking area. Proper elevation and drainage help direct water away from the building and reduce mud at frequently used entrances.

The final finish affects appearance, cleaning and traction. The most appropriate finish depends on whether the floor will be used for storage, mechanical work, agricultural equipment, vehicles or finished interior space. Drainage areas and exterior aprons require different finishing considerations than enclosed living areas.
