Concrete Slabs for Homes, Farms and Businesses

Marc Todd Concrete installs interior and exterior concrete slabs for residential, agricultural and commercial properties throughout Southwest Michigan and Northern Indiana. With more than 35 years of concrete experience, we plan each slab around its location, intended use, expected loads, drainage needs and finished appearance.

Concrete slabs are not one-size-fits-all. A residential shed floor, farm equipment pad and business floor can require different thicknesses, mix designs, reinforcement, joint layouts and finishes. We review those details before placement so the concrete is suited to the work it will perform.

Residential Concrete Slabs

Residential slab work can include floors for sheds, workshops, additions, outbuildings, patios, walkways, utility areas and other improvements around the home. Interior floors are planned for a level, cleanable surface, while exterior slabs are pitched as needed to move water in the proper direction.

For vehicle-storage floors, see our dedicated concrete garage floor service. Decorative residential slabs may also use integral color, stamped concrete or concrete staining.

Agricultural Concrete Slabs

Farm slabs may serve machine storage, equipment maintenance, material handling, feed or crop storage and other demanding operations. Expected tractor, implement and equipment loads are considered when determining the slab construction and concrete mix requirements.

We pour agricultural slabs for farm shops, equipment buildings, machine sheds, work areas, pads and other farm uses. For complete building-floor information, visit our pole barn concrete floor page.

Commercial and Business Concrete Slabs

Business slabs may be used for shops, storage buildings, service areas, work floors, loading areas, equipment pads and exterior access areas. We consider vehicle traffic, equipment, concentrated loads, drainage and the way employees and customers will use the space.

Larger business and industrial projects can be reviewed through our commercial concrete services.

Interior and Exterior Concrete Slabs

Interior slabs may incorporate vapor-control measures, insulation, radiant heat tubing, floor drains or plumbing penetrations when included in the project design. Exterior slabs require attention to exposure, elevation, slope, drainage and traction. Adjoining concrete can be connected with rebar dowels when appropriate to the project design and movement conditions.

The finish is selected for the intended use. Options may include smooth or troweled interior surfaces, textured exterior finishes, decorative color, staining or other specified treatments.

Concrete Mix Options for Slab Construction

The concrete mix is selected according to whether the slab is indoors or outdoors, the expected loading, exposure to freezing and thawing, placement conditions and any project specifications. Available slab mix options can include:

  • Standard interior floor mixes for enclosed residential, farm and business floors.
  • Air-entrained exterior mixes for slabs exposed to Michigan and Indiana freeze-thaw cycles.
  • Higher-strength mixes when heavier loads, concentrated use or project specifications require additional compressive strength.
  • Fiber-reinforced mixes when fibers are selected to supplement the slab's crack-control plan.
  • Accelerated or cold-weather mixes when placement conditions and the construction schedule make faster strength development appropriate.
  • Decorative and integral-color mixes for slabs where appearance is part of the finished design.

Mix design is only one part of slab performance. Water-cement ratio, placement, consolidation, finishing, curing, jointing and reinforcement all work together. Rebar and welded-wire reinforcement are separate from the concrete mix and are included when required by the project design or scope.

Subgrade Preparation, Reinforcement and Drainage

Every site is evaluated individually. Existing subgrade conditions are graded, corrected and compacted as needed to provide consistent support. The preparation method and materials depend on the existing soil, building conditions, slab use and project requirements rather than one standard base assembly for every job.

Slab thickness, rebar, welded-wire reinforcement, thickened areas and edge details are selected according to loading and design requirements. Floor pitch and drain locations can be planned where water management is needed, and exterior slabs are sloped to support proper drainage away from buildings and frequently used areas.

Control Joints and Concrete Finishing

Control joints are laid out to help manage normal concrete shrinkage and reduce uncontrolled cracking. Joint placement is coordinated with slab shape, thickness, openings, drains, equipment areas and adjoining concrete.

We discuss finish requirements before the pour so the finished surface is appropriate for cleaning, traction, vehicle use, equipment movement or decorative appearance. Exterior work can also connect with concrete driveways and approaches.
